Working with Self-Harming Teens: A Family-Centered Approach

Presented by Laura Rushing, LCSW

Promote positive lasting change in the lives of the teens you work with, learn to manage distressing emotions, and build connections between family members in this impactful training for licensed mental health professionals.

This presentation will enhance your professional skills in working with teens who self-harm, as well as access strategies to communicate with and connect with their parents/caregivers to provide supportive avenues for treatment.

Understand how to take marginalized identities and resource access into consideration when assessing risk and referring self-harming clients out to sometimes costly community or self-help resources. Learn to identify risk factors for self-harming behaviors, including for clients who identify as female, non-binary, or trans, and individuals with lower economic status, who are statistically disproportionately affected by self-harm and suicidal ideation.

By completing this training, you will feel confident in involving parents, caregivers and teens alike in building connection and breaking the disruptive cycle of self-injury.

This program will not only help social workers and counselors open up discussion of self-harm between teens and caregivers, but also give them hands-on interventions to use at home outside of sessions.
