Authentic Communication in Family Play Therapy

Presented by Jaclyn N. Sepp, MA, LPC-S, RPT-S™, NCC, RYT® 200

Family Play Therapy combines play therapy and family systems theory by shifting the focus from one identified client to the whole family or a family dyad. By looking at the mutual influences of family members on each other we can see how a family functions, creating understanding for re-occurring concerns in the context of the system where it emerges. Family Play Therapy allows us to troubleshoot problems with a blame-free approach that promotes authentic communication, nervous system co-regulation and meaningful relationships. If you’re doing play therapy, you’re already doing many aspects of family play therapy because you’re now a part of their family system!

Although play is the most natural form of communication for children, the use of “play” in family play therapy can bring up questions related to acceptability of playing in the client’s family culture, perceptions of play, and what play looks like in their home.

This training will increase awareness on how cultural diversity impact family play therapy through attention to race, ethnicity, religion, education, socioeconomic status, age, gender, sexual orientation and generational differences.
