Mining Family Treasures: An Introduction to Solution-Focused Therapy

Presented by Joy Cannon, MA, LPC, RPT™, NCC

Play Therapy invites children into nonjudgmental relationships to process experiences and express themselves through toys in their natural first language and at safe psychological distance. However, verbal language also matters because it impacts children's thinking about self, resources and the world.

In Solution-Focused Play Therapy, kids and their caregivers not only benefit from reorienting how they engage the current problem, but can use their skills and mindset shifts to generalize in future challenges. Whether you are a Solution-Focused practitioner or not, come learn helpful reframes, open-ended questions for intakes, encouragement skills and build your confidence in your unique strengths.

Throughout the process, the presenter will explain and give examples of how SFPT empowers diverse families, namely by using the language of the family and asking families to choose their goals rather than follow potential cultural or personal biases of the therapist. Additionally, since SFPT is a strengths-based approach the presenter will explain and give examples of several culturally recognized and minimized personal strengths from case examples.
