An Affirming Framework for the Neurodivergent Client in Play Therapy

This training is designed for therapists in agency, private practice, and school settings who are interested in learning more about Neurodivergent child clients in play therapy, with primary focus on Dyslexics, ADHDers and Autistics.

Together we will focus on identifying ways Neurodivergent children present in play therapy as well as ways to best serve this population. Participants will enhance their knowledge of play therapy techniques and additional support systems that should be put in place to support this population.

Training Objectives

Through this workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • Define five terms often used to describe Neurodivergent clients, including Neurodiverse vs. Neurodivergent, Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria, and Pervasive Demand Avoidance (also characterized as Pervasive Drive for Autonomy).

  • Name the three extra sensory systems and identify one example of each in a play therapy situation.

  • Identify at least one other member of a client's “team” in addition to play therapy and determine how these outside services will enhance the effects of play therapy.


Amanda de la Llata, LPC, RPT™, LCPC

Prior to becoming a therapist, Amanda de la Llata, LPC, RPT™, LCPC, spent 13 years working with children in educational and home settings as a preschool teacher, para-professional, and nanny. Through her years of working with children, Amanda became inspired to help children and families who were in emotional distress and needed encouragement, guidance, and hope. 

Amanda has specialized training in neurodivergent concerns and identities, which includes ADHDers, Dyslexics, Autistic individuals, P.A.N.D.A.S/P.A.N.S, Sensory Processing Disorder and Sensory Processing Differences. She uses her knowledge of sensory processing to also help survivors of trauma, both children and adults.


Good to Know

This is an in-person training and will not be recorded. Please dress comfortably, bring a water bottle, snacks, and anything else you need to feel comfortable in a classroom setting for the duration of our training.

To receive contact hours, participants must attend the full presentation and complete the post-presentation evaluation.

Ensemble Therapy is an Approved Provider for the Association for Play Therapy (APT), Approved Provider 23-706. Ensemble Therapy is an approved provider endorsed by an international organization and therefore trainings quality for the 50% CEs mandated by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) for LPC and LMFT. Play Therapy credit is available to mental health professionals and graduate students in a mental health program.

It is the responsibility of the attendee to verify whether CE credit offered by the Ensemble Learning Center meets the regulations of the participant’s licensing/certification board.

Kaylyn Evans

Kaylyn Evans is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Southwestern University in Biology and Psychology and her Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling at Texas State University. Kaylyn is currently working towards her Registered Play Therapist™ (RPT™) credential. Kaylyn’s goal is to provide trauma-informed, attachment-based, anti-racist, and LGBTQIA+ affirming counseling at all times. Kaylyn has experience working with children, adolescents, and families in a variety of settings including elementary school and community agencies.
